What level does onix evolve in Pokemon silver?

Onix only evolves when you trade it while it is holding a metal coat. I would advise catching a geodude for the beginning of the game but try to catch a rhydon and evolve it to a rhyhorn, that is the best rock type before you beat the elite 4
