Dorothea created the Prison reform. She researched the treatment that psychotic people received in prison. She results showed that many mentally ill people were not fed, clothed, treated properly. Her reform begin in Massachusetts, in which her "Memorial" a document of her observation was shown to the Legislature and from the evidence Massachusetts began construct of asylum. From the victory at Massachusetts, Dix traveled to other states and countries to persuade legislatures and governments to built institutions for the insane. The last step in Dix's reform, she went to Washington, D.C to propose a bill to the Congress for the government to fund care for the mentally ill, twice the bill was denied, but after a section was added to the bill that proposed you need to be eighteen years of age to check yourself out, and that is the only way, it was passed.
