What gives the lunula its white color?

The lunula, the crescent-shaped white area at the base of the nail, appears white due to the reflection of light from the thickened, opaque layer of keratin and the underlying nail matrix. This area is not fully transparent like the rest of the nail, and the presence of blood vessels underneath is less pronounced, contributing to its lighter appearance.
