The arterial ligament, also known as the ligamentum arteriOSum, is a fibrous band that connects the pulmonary trunk to the aorta in the heart. Its primary purpose is to retain the connection between these two major blood vessels after birth, as it is a remnant of the ductus arteriOSus, which allows fetal blood to bypass the lungs. After birth, the ductus arteriOSus closes and transforms into the ligamentum arteriOSum, providing structural support and maintaining the anatomical relationship between the aorta and pulmonary artery.
