Why is silver used in dressings for injuries?

Silver has natural antibiotic properties and creates a barrier that germs cannot cross. The FDA does not approve of silver for medical use. However, it is still sold at vitamin stores. People who drink colloidal silver to ward off germs often develop argyria, which causes their skin to turn a grey blue color.
