He often said that it gave his life purpose. Also, he was apparently the sole Survivor of a battle, out of a (regiment?) of men - it enforced the belief that he had been chosen by 'higher forces' for supernatural protection throught his life. Anti-sematism amongst the ranks of fellow soldiers only confirmed his convictions to 'do something about it' after the war.
