How do you build up your dogs muscles?

I remember when they were fed live chickens for protein then had cinder blocks tied to them while being run with a four wheeler. My pit bulls growing up ate one can of food a day between the two of them and one cup of dry food. The mother exercised by jumping up and grabbing a hold of a rope that was hung from a tree branch. She would swing on that rope until she got bored.
