Which countries were fighting against each other?

Throughout its long and complex history, the United States has fought against quite a few different countries. For example, during the Revolutionary Period, America squared off against 'the home-country' of Great Britain -- and successfully. As yet another example, America engaged in hostilities against Germany, Italy, and Japan during World War II.
