Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau was in office from April 20, 1968, to June 3, 1979 and from March 3, 1980 to June 30, 1984. He is historically the third-longest serving Canadian prime minister at 15 years and 164 days.
Although defeated in the election of 1979, he won in 1980 and returned after the short tenure of Joe Clark, the 16th prime minister, whose minority government was voted out.
