There is no one person who named Argentina. In the early 1800's (before Argentina became an independent nation) the people of Buenos Aires were called "argentinos" which means people from silver. This is because there is a very large river in Buenos Aires called the Rio de la Plata, "the river of silver." Therefore the people were called "argentinos" because in Latin the Word for silver is "argentium."
