Why did Charles Dickens visit Virginia City?

In the Bonanza TV episode, "A Passion for Justice", Season 5, Episode 2, he was invited by the Virginia City literary society. In reality, the farthest west Charles Dickens ever got in America was Ohio on his first visit in 1842.
