When did charities start?

Charities started informally centuries ago, the idea of charity or helping out those in need is as old as mankind. It is difficult to pinpoint when the first formal charities may have begun, but the Catholic Church was founded in 1 A.D. and can be called one of the oldest still running charities ever founded.
