i have always felt that "Helen Keller" could have easy been a completely non disabled person, or a disabled person who is made to look like they accomplished things they did not. in no way do i mean to take anything away from the disabled, i have the utmost respect for them. however, i see how it would benefit her family to attribute writings to her to generate sales

Keller suffered brain damage because of fever around 18 months. She grew up seemingly blind and deaf from there, so , no she was not faking. However there was a study done a few years back on blind and deaf people who had working eyes and ears (as Keller did). The study found subjects could become aware of colors and Words spoken after the fact. For instance, the next day the person remembered a person wore a yellow shirt. They accounted for this information by assuming they had been told. Deaf people remembered subjects of verbal conversations that were not transmitted to them by sign language or lip reading. The conclusion of the study indicates that direct audio/visual contact can be delayed by brain injury but will still work its way into the consciousness of an affected person. Keller's outstanding response to Sullivan's care seems to indicate this may be the case.
