Butterflies: It used as a metaphor for all things beauteous and wonderful in the world. The exhausted German soldier is mesmerized by it because it reminded him of how beautiful the world can be and his civilian life of promise and hope. Unfortunately, he let his guard down to admire it, and was shot, after having essentially survived the whole war. Thus the utter futility of the "Great War" was underlined.
