The first Siberian tiger, also known as the Caspian tiger, is believed to have gone extinct in the 1970s. This subspecies, once found in regions of Central Asia, including parts of Iran, Turkey, and the Caspian Sea area, faced habitat loss and hunting pressures. Although the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) still exists today, the Caspian tiger is often confused with it, but they are separate subspecies. Conservation efforts continue for the remaining Siberian tigers, which are now primarily found in eastern Russia and parts of China.
