Does the iPhone use the same charger as the iPod?

No. There are slight differences in both the charging and USB syncing cords between the iphone and the iPods. DO NOT use an old iPod cord with your iphone or vice versa - it can produce sync anomalies as well as fry the battery, as the cords carry different electrical loads.
