What did the millennium dome replace?

The Millennium Dome, now known as The O2, was built to celebrate the turn of the millennium and did not directly replace any existing structure. However, its construction on the Greenwich Peninsula in London led to the demolition of several industrial buildings and warehouses that were previously part of the area's history.
