How many American ships participated on D-Day?

More than 650 Allied warships took part in the Normandy landings, not counting many hundreds of landing craft including wooden Higgins boats.

The US ships included three battleships, three heavy cruisers, and 39 destroyers and destroyer escorts. The total number of vessels numbered more than 5000, including more than 800 merchant ships and auxiliaries carrying supplies as part of Operation Neptune, the amphibious assault within Operation Overlord.
