A:

Religion does not necessarily build character, but in some cases it can do so. The discipline of attending church, being on time and paying attention can be character-building if there is no other activity that the young person dislikes enough to require the discipline of attendance and attention.

Being required to think about right and wrong can also be character-building, and for some young people, religion provides the only opportunity to think these things through and form moral judgements. Of course, observing religious persons acting unethically or hypocritically can have the opposite effect on character, so there is always a balance.
