On his 33rd day of the journey, Christopher Columbus believed he had reached the outskirts of Asia, specifically the islands off the coast of India. He was convinced he had found a new route to the East Indies, despite actually landing in the Bahamas and not realizing he had discovered a new continent. His miscalculations were largely due to the prevailing belief in a smaller Earth and the existence of a direct westward route to Asia.
