What is the Corfu exchange?

The Corfu Exchange refers to a significant diplomatic agreement made in 1923, following the Greco-Turkish War. It mandated the compulsory exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, resulting in the relocation of approximately 1.5 million Greeks from Turkey to Greece and around 500,000 Muslims from Greece to Turkey. This exchange aimed to create ethnically homogeneous nation-states and reduce ethnic tensions, but it also led to considerable hardship and suffering for those displaced. The agreement was formalized under the Treaty of Lausanne.
