Should the DTMF on a cell phone be set to long short or off?

Use short to make (for instance) navigating voicemail systems as quickly as possible UNLESS you run into a system that won't respond to the short tone - then switch to long. So, use short when you can and fall back to long when you run into a system that won't recognize a short signal.
