Thor is the son of Odin, the Allfather and leader of the pantheon of gods known as the Aesir. Other Aesir include Friggr, his mother; Heimdallr, the eternal watchman; Tyr, god of bravery and single combat; Sif, a golden-haired warmaiden; Idunn, goddess of youth; Baldr, unable to be harmed by any weapon; Hodr, a blind brother; and countless more. Two allies of the Aesir, ambassadors from a race of "fertility gods" called the Vanir, are Freyr and his sister Freyja, who tend the honored dead at Valhalla. The Einherjar are mortal men who died in battle with honor, who live and train in combat at Valhalla, and fight alongside the Aesir in Ragnarok. Many Jotunns (giants) are at peace with the Aesir in some stories. Loki, the trickster god, is an ally of the Aesir, until a malicious prank of his resulted in Baldr's death and set Ragnarok into motion.

The Aesir also have many enemies, chiefly in the Jotunns, a race of giants that is consistently at war with them. Important giants are: Loki, son of Farbauti, his father, and Laufey, his mother; Aegir, the guardian of the seas; Loki's son Jormungandr, a massive serpent that encircles the world of men; Loki's daughter Hel, who resides in a great fortress in Niflheim, (the Norse underworld) and commands armies of the dead; Loki's son Fenrir, a great wolf destined to devour Odin; Thrivaldi, a giant with nine heads; Skadi, Skrymir, et. al. Many Jotunns are characterized by a destructive force of nature. The Norse thought it was Hrimthurs, or frost giants, that brought the cold snows, and the Sons of Muspell, fire giants, that brought drought. It is the chieftain of the fire giants, Surtr, that ends the world at the conclusion of Ragnarok by setting Yggdrasil, the world tree, ablaze.
