In terms of the controversy, she used her personal email server to send everything from mundane personal correspondence to top-secret State Department information. Unfortunately, in order to accommodate her use of the personal server, a lot of legally required security measures were disabled resulting in comparatively easy compromise of the server and loss of control of the information in the emails. It is assumed that during both detected and undetected attacks on the server that foreign intelligence services got access to much - or most - of the information she was transmitting. Since it was not managed according to best (and legally required) security practices, it is currently unknown how serious the compromise was and how much classified information was collected by outside entities.
