The Eiffel Tower is named after Gustave Eiffel, the engineer whose company designed and built the structure. It was constructed as the entrance arch for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World's Fair) held in Paris to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Eiffel's firm, along with architect Maurice Koechlin and engineer Émile Nouguier, oversaw the project, which became an iconic symbol of France. The tower was originally intended to be temporary but was so popular that it remained standing.
