Nitrogen compounds are often used as fertilizers to increase plant growth. Sometimes there is much more nitrogen than plants need. What happens to most of this excess nitrogen?

Algal Blooms

Freshwater algal blooms are normally associated with phosphorus runoff, not nitrogen. Incidentally, the source has never been proven (though suspected) to be agricultural fertilizers in the case of either nitrogen or phosphorus. See the related link below.
