Who are the laestrygonians and what do they want to do with Odysseus and his crew?

The Laestrygonians are a race of giant cannibals encountered by Odysseus and his crew in Homer's "Odyssey." When Odysseus and his men arrive at their island, the Laestrygonians attack, destroying most of the ships and devouring many of the crew members.
