What is the purpose of a shoe?

Shoes, called in French, sabots, were helpful in stopping machinery from running, by throwing them into the gears. That is where the Word, sabotage came from.

But they were mainly helpful in comfort. People did not die from freezing their feet when walking in freezing weather, and they did not die from infections that started in a cut on your foot from a sharp stone.
