The first Transcontinental Railroad in the United States was built across the northern part of the country, connecting Sacramento, California, to Omaha, Nebraska. Construction began in 1863 and was completed on May 10, 1869, when the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met at Promontory Summit, Utah. This monumental project greatly facilitated travel and trade across the continent.
