Why are Germans proud and uneasy about their culture?

First off, I don't think we should speak for an entire country, people or culture. Secondly, I'm not German, so this is only a guess as to why some Germans are proud and uneasy at the same time. They have accomplished many amazing historical achievements, while causing ridiculous amounts of bloodshed at the same time. That can lead to a national identity of pride maintained humble through shame.
