WW 1 ended because Germany's war economy could no longer sustain the cost of its war effort, and because its manpower was simply running out, meaning that it could no longer replace its human losses and war-weary front troops. The Allies on the other hand had much larger human reserves, certainly after the USA joined in 1918; and its combined economic wealth to sustain the cost of warfare was much greater.

The peace conditions were dictated by the Allies in the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. Basically it came down to enormous damage payments to be made by Germany, to large loss of land, mostly given away to States newly established by the Allies; and to reducing the German Army to almost nothing. All this condemned Germany to economic poverty and huge domestic unrest and caused enormous resentment towards the Allies in Germany. The Versailles peace conditions can be seen as the cause of WW 2 and the rise of Hitler.
