Does penicillin cure dental problem such as infections?

I have a gum infection in the gum surrounding my lower right wisdom tooth, caused by the top wisdom tooth pushing against it. I began feeling discomfort which turned into pain severe enough for me to seek treatment 4 days ago. I began taking penicillin 72 hours ago, and had the top wisdom tooth removed 48 hours ago. So far, I'm in no pain relief. I'm returning to the oral surgeon tomorrow. My pain gets worse when I lay down, so sleeping is near impossible. I also cannot chew, and swallowing is very difficult.
