To get Refugee status you must have fled you home in fear of "being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion" In addition you must not be able to return to your home country for the same reason. You then must register with the United Nations High commission on Refugee's. You may be selected for an interview for resettlement in the US if you are part of a population that the UNHCR and the US have decided to resettle or if you have a close relative already in America who has applied for you to come. You must pass several interviews and medical testing. If you do you may be resettled. It is totally up to the US if the take you as refugees do not have right to admittance. There are about 14 million refugees in the world the US has accepted 41,279 of them so far. It is a long shot to say the least. It is easier for people in fear to come to the U.S. on a temporary visa and apply for asylum. To gain asylum people must prove in a court of law that they will be in danger if the return home.
