What is the purpose of valves?

A valve is a device that manipulates the flow of a fluid (liquid or gas) from one area to another. It can simply shut off the flow, it can increase or decrease the amount of flow, or it can reroute the flow of a fluid to a different pathway, as well as many other functions.
