It's almost certainly a symptom of the cold you had. If it's so bad that opening your eyes is painful, use clean warm water to soften the sleep and wipe it away with a clean flannel or sponge.
If the problem has not cleared up within two or three days, it could be an indication that you have an eye infection, possibly because your immune system has been putting all of its efforts into fighting off the cold. Make an appointment with your doctor, who will give you eyedrops or antibiotics to combat it.
