Natural gas was first used by the Chinese around 500 BC, who discovered it seeping from the ground and began to transport it via bamboo pipes for heating and cooking. In ancient Greece, natural gas was also used in religious rituals, where it was known to fuel the Oracle of Delphi. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that natural gas began to be used more widely for lighting and heating, particularly in Europe and North America. The development of gas lamps in the early 1800s marked a significant turning point in its application.
