Can you use a recommendation letter from a professor not related to the field you are applying too?

Yes you can. However, the letter should where possible indicate "their" reasons for supporting you and have in the body of the referral any contact they or their department may have had in common with the field you are applying for otherwise the letter is a personal reference.
