The South faced many challeges during the Civil War. Perhaps it's greatest military challenge was keeping its armies properly supplied with food, clothing and transportation. In other Words logistics. Soldiers who arrived on the battlefield exhausted, tired and hungry, as was so often the case, due to the chronic inability of the Confederate government to properly cloth and feed its men, were at an automatic disadvantage relative to their opponents. In addtion the Confederacy, especially after 1863 couldn't provide proper care and fodder for the cavalry and artillery horses. To top it off, it commonly provided its cannoneers with faulty amuntion and fuses for its artillery shells. These were great handicaps that may have been the deciding factor in combat readiness of CSA land forces.
