The Crusaders Fought in the holyland (The Middle East) for possesion of Jerusalum, the city in which Jesus Christ died and was reborn. Well! That is a religious not an historical answer. The Crusades took on a wide variety of targets. The early and primary one was to allow clear passage of pilgrims to Palestine, directed against various peoples en route, and eventually the Saracens when they got there. After this was eventually achieved, a kingdom was set up and subsequently defended for a period. Other crusades included the English stopping off in Portugal to assist the Portuguese king; the capture and sacking of Christian Byzantium after a dispute between the Roman and Eastern Orthodox churches; and against the non-conformist Christian Cathars in France.
