Who was the first European explorer to come to Utah?

The first European explorer to come to Utah was probably Spanish Franciscan friar Silvestre Vélez de Escalante. He led an expedition with Francisco Atanasio Domínguez in 1776. They were searching for a route from Santa Fe to California.
