The first practical LED (light-emitting diode) was developed in 1962 by Nick Holonyak Jr. at General Electric. Initially, these LEDs emitted red light and were used mainly in indicators and displays. Over the following decades, advancements in materials and technology led to the development of LEDs that could emit a variety of colors, including blue and white, significantly expanding their applications.
