They are an easy way to keep people updated on your life or on a project that you're working on. As you may or may not know, a blog is somewhere where you post a message and people comment on it. The downside? Crude people will post crude comments. That's the biggest disadvantage I can think of. They are a free way for you to write and express your knowledge and thought about areas of interest or expertise.
Because of a possibility to place 'Comments' you can consider a 'Blog' to be highly 'Interactive'.
