How did the chieftain selected in a barangay?

In a barangay, the chieftain, or "barangay captain," is typically selected through local elections held every three years. Eligible voters within the barangay cast their ballots to choose their preferred candidate from among those who have declared their intention to run. Candidates often have to meet certain qualifications, such as being a resident of the barangay and of legal voting age. The elected chieftain is responsible for local governance and community leadership.
