Where does the tradition of putting money on your windowsill on New Year's Eve originate from?

I have NO idea, but my family has done this for generations. We actually call each other on New Year's eve...just to be sure no one forgets. Only one year did I not do it, and it was a horrible money year, Never Again! Happy New Year!
