The American boat destroyed by enemy fire in 1937 was the USS Panay, a Navy gunboat. It was attacked and sunk by Japanese aircraft on December 12, 1937, while on the Yangtze River in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The incident led to international outrage but was ultimately not a catalyst for U.S. entry into World War II.
