U.S. "war nickels" were made from late 1942 to the end of 1945. Nickel metal was needed for the war effort so the composition of the coin was changed to an alloy composed of 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese.

Aside from the date, the most obvious way to identify a war nickel is to look on the back side for a large mint mark over the dome of Monticello. You'll find a D, S, or P. War nickels marked the first time that Philadelphia used the P mint mark; it wasn't used again for 35 years.

War nickels have been worth up to a dollar for their silver content, depending on the current price of that metal. Coins in better condition can be worth more as collectibles.

New war nickels were slightly lighter in color than regular nickels. As they tarnished they took on a dark gray color so if you're fortunate enough to get one in change today they stand out very prominently.
