When the first useful robot designed?

So far the first robot goes to the Chinese because they have the best documentation (it was a huge water clock with several automatons that did things like display plaques and ring bells), although many artifacts are being unearthed and catalogued that make it a tight race between the Iraq region, Egypt, Greece and India.
