What is a poket borough?

A pocket borough is a small electoral district or constituency that is controlled by a single person or family, allowing them to effectively dictate its electoral outcomes. This practice was common in the UK during the 18th and early 19th centuries, where such boroughs often had very few voters, making them easy to manipulate. Pocket boroughs were typically characterized by limited representation and were eventually addressed through electoral reforms, such as the Reform Acts.
