The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires the manufacturers to place an expiry date on medication containers. This having been said, most medications are stable compounds and should last for ten years in an unopened container (not subjected to temperature extremes) and two years after the container is opened. This does not apply to relatively unstable compounds like acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).
