Does Mel's square foot gardening mix work?

Traditionally, Mel's square foot gardening mix had compost, peat moss, and vermiculite. They are all traditional recipes for success. However, there is a concern over the overharvesting of peat bogs worldwide. Popular substitutes for the peat moss are coconut fiber or leaf mold.
